Happy Homeowners: Scott & Margaret’s Dream Bungalow

Scott and Margaret always dreamed of building on the beautiful property where Margaret grew up. After years of finally securing the lot, they were ready to plan for the future and invest in an energy-efficient and space-efficient home to enjoy with their family.

Tell us a bit about yourself and why you chose to build a custom cottage.

We are two teachers with two adult children and an aging dad who lives next to our newly severed lot. The lot’s proximity to Grandpa’s house meant that we wanted to build in the least disruptive manner possible to his peaceful surroundings.

What made you choose Quality Homes as your builder?

Once we secured our large lot, we looked at a few builders. We knew someone who had built with Quality Homes and loved both the quality and the speed at which the process was completed. It seemed a good fit.  We also were keen to build a home with specific energy efficient features and Quality Homes took that on with little difficulty.

“What is really remarkable is that we put down our 10% deposit in May and we were living in our house that December. Really, what other company gives you a brand new house in that time frame?”

Tell us about the process.

The process is very efficient and organized, which we respond well to. We appreciated both the responsiveness of the Quality Homes Team no matter what point of the process we were at and their flexibility when we changed our minds about certain features or design elements.

The Lindsay was transported by truck, in 3 modules, to their lot and set onto the poured foundation.

Why did you select the Lindsay design?

The Lindsay had the square footage and the number of bedrooms and bathrooms we were looking for as well as an open concept living space with a super kitchen. Also, its natural light and windows are a real feature, as well as beautiful porches. We customized this plan by adding an attached double-car garage.

What is your favourite part of the home?

We love the energy efficiency of our build as well as the pretty side porch where we spend oodles of time!

It was important to Margaret & Scott to integrate various energy efficient features into their home, including:

  • Air Source Heat Pump and Hybrid Water Heater
  • Exterior Wall Insulation to R24 Batt and 2’ R5 Rigid Insulation
  • Attic Insulation to R60
  • 2’ Polystyrene Insulation Added Under Concrete Floor – R10

These components provide more comfort for the homeowner. Such as an even temperature throughout the home. Plus a quieter home. Not only because of the added insulation but also due to Quality Homes’ modular construction techniques that produce a much tighter build overall. Which also results in significant savings in terms of utility costs – less money to heat and cool.

What advice would you give to someone looking to go through this process?

Ask questions. It is important to understand the costs associated with building (exclusive of the purchase price of the home). The Quality Homes Team will assist you with dealing with city permits and they have banking partners who can assist with mortgages too, which can help expedite the process. Oh and take a lot of photos!
